Washington State University Wins Cougar Cup

mallory kent birdiesPULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State senior Mallory Kent posted a seven-shot victory and led the Cougars to the team title of the 2013 Cougar Cup at Washington State University's Palouse Ridge Golf Club, Tuesday.

Kent backed up her first day (70-70) with an even-par 72 to finish at 4-under, 212 and earn her second-career victory. She tied teammate Kristen Rue (2012) for best three-round score in Cougar Cup history and bested Lea Garner of BYU and Alice Kim of Gonzaga.

As a team, Washington State shot 10-over, 298 and finished at 22-over, 886, 12 shots better than Gonzaga. It was the third victory for the Cougars in the six-year history of the event.

"Mallory and the team's victory is a testament to our department," Cougar Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. "Bill Moos came out and spoke to the team last week and reminded our student-athletes that our department is undefeated at home this year. He set expectations and our team answered with great play in tough conditions."

Kamimura added, "Our kids have done a great job preparing for competition and made the most of their opportunity. I cannot thank (WSU Athletic Trainer) Nick Gallotto mallory kent birdies 2enough for what he does to get us ready to play."

Rue, a junior, and sophomore Rachel Lewis each carded a 74 (+2), Tuesday in rainy conditions and finished in a three-way tie for fourth with Gonzaga's Ciera Min at 6-over, 222.

Junior Lindsay Harmon placed in a four-way tie for 14th at 230 (+14). Sophomore Nani Yanagi, making her first-career start, tied for 43rd at 240 (+24). Freshman Cherokee Kim competed as individual in her collegiate debut and tied for 31st at 237 (+21).

The Cougars will play in the Rose City Collegiate, Monday-Tuesday. The event will be held in Aurora, Ore., and hosted by Portland State.
